This is our 6 year old daughter, Julie. After suffering a lack of oxygen at birth, Julie began having seizures and spent her first 9 weeks in the hospital. During this time, she was also diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Cortical Visual Impairment, and Reflux. At 15 months old, she developed Hydrocephalus and had a shunt placed on her brain.
We spent Julie’s first 2 ½ years in North Carolina before moving to Washington with the military. At the time, Julie had a really hard time with position changes and riding in the car and would get so upset that she got sick any time that we went anywhere. The Elks Therapy Program has helped so much by coming to our house for Julie’s Occupational Therapy sessions.
The past 3 ½ years have been wonderful for Julie. Through her therapies, and a few surgeries, Julie has made great strides and is really blossoming. With the help of many great doctors, teachers and therapists, Julie has improved in her abilities to hold her head up, start to reach for toys or things that interest her, use her eyes more and to make choices or indicate whether or not she wants more of something or is all done. Julie now tolerates many positions and many different people touching and working with her.
The Elks Therapy Program has been a blessing to Julie and we are so thankful for the time that they have taken to get to know Julie and to make us feel like family. We know that therapy sessions will be a part of the rest of our lives and we are happy to have our therapist at Elks along for the journey.
