Having a grandfather that has held multiple offices in the California Elks (state and local levels) led to a referral to your WA Elks Therapy Program for Children. He was aware of the therapy program, as their state and Hawaii provide similar therapy services to the children of CA and HI. His request included the local therapist to be part of his grandson’s intervention team to assist in his transition to public elementary school. Difficulties at his preschool and concerns voiced by the teacher there led to an occupational therapy assessment that qualified him for services to focus on fine motor, sensorimotor and self-help. As you know, the out-of-pocket expenses for private therapy sessions would add to this family’s financial difficulties and so a referral to WA Elks Therapy for home-based and no-cost therapy was made by his primary care provider.
With a diagnosis of autism becoming more real, weekly home visits were initiated. Loki’s grandfather and uncle both showed signs of the autism. We now know that there is a strong familial/genetic connection to some types of this disorder.
Kindergarten readiness was the focus that his parents voiced as their primary concern. Having a two year old sibling available to practice/demonstrate more appropriate interactions has been priceless. We’ve practiced hand writing, playing games, gross motor/sensorimotor activities, interacting/voicing concerns/needs with others and, of course, he is delighted to share electronic/chemistry kits.
At this time, Loki only receives adaptive PE from the school district. Some “naughty” behaviors have gotten special visits to the principals office or inside recess just like many others in his class.
Loki’s family, including parents, aunts and uncles and grandparents are “eternally grateful” to WETP for this therapy assistance provided for Loki.
